One Flew Out Of The Nest Too Early

GNIAZDO / NEST part 2

Polish Art Against Borders

ONE FLEW OUT OF THE NEST TOO EARLY

Women are human beings, just like men, but history shows us how easy it has been to erase her name, giving her titles such as wife, mistress, whore or mother. When she is obedient, she's Mary when she resists; Eve, and when she sins, it is easy to punish her by making her a nameless wife of Lot - a silent pillar of salt.
Czesław Miłosz said in his lecture at the Swedish Academy in 1981: "It may be that there is no other memory than the memory of wounds, ..." The title of the work One Flew Out of the Nest The Too Early is a reference to the title of Ken Kesey's novel from 1962: One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. The work is a documentation of personal experiences associated with a miscarriage - or in this case, the unnesting of an embryo in the uterus.
Although I belong to a privileged group of women, who have been given the chance to live in an equal relationship, full of love and respect, I discovered that in final situations, as a woman, my body is an island tangled up in the marriage between culture and biology. The related process with a miscarriage was one of the most traumatic and disgusting experiences in my life. Nobody prepared me for this inevitable avalanche of blood, that would completely sterilize me from the accumulated hope, plans and concerns for this new thing to come. But by quoting the Finnish poet Solveig von Schoultz from the poem The Fist of Necessity (Nödvändighetens Näve) from 1946, I declare: "Do you think that you can tame me, life?"

Tytuł pracy One Flew Out of the Nest Too Early jest nawiązaniem do tytułu opowieści  Ken'a Kesey'a z 1962 roku  pt. One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.

GNIAZDO - NEST 1

NEST

Base: I, you, he, she, it, we, you, they
Superstructure: an outside sphere – a family, a house, an inside sphere – ego + alter ego + id
an emotional and intellectual baggage of direct and indirect experience that we accumulate in ourselves (each of us is their own nest, in which something/someone is constantly nesting) warmth, smell, fight, mum, culture, closeness, retreat, route, shelter, sense of safety, family ties, intricate construction, environment, surroundings, security, thallus, soil, synergy, Lot – Gallery at Vistula, kitchen, cull, asylum, home, return, uterus, habitat, ecotope, wasps, hatchling, stork, security, preservation, beginning, home, siblings, feeding, meticulousness, structure, care, Bogna, stork, chimney, hatchling, offspring, feather, bench, process, stigma, descendant, shelter, a hiding place of a very delicate and fragile make-up that needs to be constantly maintained, pallet, hellhole, lair, roof, coronet, community, constraint, settling down, security.

“Unless one likes complexity one cannot feel at home in the twenty-first century.”[1]
“Can the significance of existence be depleted? Assuming that existence is a value (and this is the assumption I make), even though it can be a curse, it does not change a thing when I ask: can anyone annihilate the value of this curse?”[2]
The eponymous Nest was made, in different ways, by the artists who represent two academic centers in Poland: the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk and the Faculty of Fine Arts in Toruń. The intimate statements, first written down, then visualized, drag the viewers in THEIR nests, more or less metaphorical, at times intensely literal, or ambiguous. In this case, the nest is a synonym of three words articulated by each of the artists engaged in the exhibition. They built their nests for themselves and for others.
The exhibition project is a critical commentary on the contemporary times, stuffy and increasingly alarming. While analyzing the reality in which she lives, Rosi Braidotti writes that there came to existence a new ethics based on the experience of pain, sensitivity, and changeability.[3] According to the philosopher, these three components should be constitutive of our humanity and our sensitivity toward the world. Empathizing and accepting the continuous fluctuation constitute the character of the modern-day human.

GNIAZDO
Baza: ja, ty, on, ona, ono, my, wy, one, oni
Według filozofki te trzy komponenty powinny budować nasze człowieczeństwo i naszą wrażliwość wobec świata. Współodczuwanie i akceptacja ciągłej fluktuacji ‘stanowią’ o charakterze dzisiejszego człowieka.
Gniazdo to przestrzeń dobra i zła. Życiodajna i śmiercionośna, budującą i całkowicie destruktywna, zdrowa i chora.

STORMS ON STICKS

happening / 2017 promenade, Brzeźnieńska Street

Diana Rönnberg spent most of her life by the sea. As a little girl, she lived on the west coast of Sweden, where she moved with her family at the age of eight. Later, as a student, she settled in Gdańsk. “Anyone living by the seaside is familiar with the fickle whims of Neptune. The clouds are rarely white, and the sky is only blue on postcards or on a few summer days. The seaside sky is usually grey-brown, it tastes of salt and impending rain,” says the artist. In this context, it seems strange how many people equate seaside towns with non-stop festivities, an extravaganza of colours and smiles – and it is equally bewildering that seaside bliss is epitomized by fast-food stalls, fried fish, ice cream, waffles and candyfloss. Especially the latter has particular connotations: the fluffy confectionery item invented by the Italians in the 15th century that became popular in Poland under communism.

Diana Rönnberg’s happening for the NARRACJE audience alludes to the market-like atmosphere of a seaside resort. The artist offers festivalgoers candyfloss which, instead of the usual pink or blue, has been dyed grey-brown. Rönnberg’s candyfloss, tasting of liquorice and salmiak, is an autumn serving of sweets, a pinch of melancholy immersed in a cloud of summer memories.

The unique nature of Brzeźno, a seaside district of Gdańsk, hangs on a number of contradictions and paradoxes. After World War II, this former spa town, which thrived since the 19th century, turned into a grey residential area, where the melancholy beauty of the Polish seaside meets head-on with the triviality of living in a communist housing estate. Today, the surviving historical bathing infrastructure is surrounded with second-hand clothes shops and multifamily buildings painted in patterns of lighthouses and sunsets. In Brzeźno’s old spa park, cute gazebos and pergolas are cropping up on the remnants of Prussian fortifications to attract the eye of citizens and holidaymakers taking a stroll.

The ninth edition of the NARRACJE Festival will follow the dream of holidays by the sea, often recalling the pre-war history of the old spa town, but viewing it from a contemporary perspective. This double shift in time – the decades during which Brzeźno gradually lost its charm of a modern seaside location on the one hand, and moving past the summer season on the other – will allow us to look at the most interesting local stories from a different angle and reveal what cannot be seen in the summer bustle. What is the true face of Brzeźno and its inhabitants?
The story of Brzeźno will be told by artworks hinting at the anecdotes inscribed in the urban tissue and revealing the lyrical potential of seemingly ordinary places. This narrative will be populated by the inhabitants of the district and festivalgoers alike, together with the array of feelings and emotions they will experience during NARRACJE. More broadly speaking, participation in the festival will provide an opportunity to reflect on the tourism developing in Brzeźno, with all its positive and negative consequences.
