Place:
Gdansk City Gallery 1, Piwna Str. 27/29

Openning: 25th of November, 7:30 P.M.
Exhibition: 25th of SNovember – 31st of December 2016
Artists: Kamila Model, Diana Ronnberg, Natalia Bażowska, Agata Kus
Curator: Maria Sasin

Second Skin is an exhibition devoted to doubleness, alternative worlds, but also the relation with nature and the search for the sense of security. The group show features artists of the young generation from Gdańsk, Cracow and Katowice.
Diana Ronnberg moves deftly across a diverse range of styles and media. Her stage images acquire extremely different forms – from lyrical feminine photographs, to simple childlike drawings, to bold music videos of the duo Combi Cats, which she co-creates with Kordian Lewandowski. The artist also feels at home in the world of literature – she is the author of the book Sercem
w lesie
[Heartedly in the Forest]. Diana Ronnberg changes her artistic skin in a fluid and very convincing way, and therefore her works continue to strike the viewers as surprising. In turn, the work of Kamila Model is more balanced – her paintings are filled with bright patches of pastel colours. The shapes of abstract forms evoke the world of microorganisms examined under the microscope, which seem to flow in front of the viewer’s eyes. The artist’s paintings emanate tranquillity and present nature – the source of her inspiration – as a mysterious, safe and benign world. In formal terms, Model’s works bear resemblance to the delicate structure of the human skin. Or maybe the skin of an unknown extraterrestrial being? Another artist, Agata Kus, is interested in dualism, the second face, and deconstruction. Her large-scale paintings represent what seems to be everyday stories, which are real and surreal at the same time. The symmetrical reflection of the presented figures may bring to mind split personality. Or maybe just a sisterly relation with the mirror reflection? Or impaired, double vision? The seemingly simple narratives evoke a plethora of interpretative tropes, introducing the viewer into a parallel world of the protagonists of Agata Kus’ paintings. Natalia Bażowska creates paintings and installations that focus on human nature – human physicality and emotions. Her works often concern the moments of passage, the instants when we drop our old skin, but still have not made it to the other side. We are suspended in a safe cocoon, right before hatching out.
Second Skin is the first exhibition in the cycle North – South. The project showcases works by Tri-City artists in confrontation with artists from the south of Poland.

Druga Skóra to wystawa opowiadająca o podwójności, alternatywnych światach, ale też
o relacji z naturą i poszukiwaniu poczucia bezpieczeństwa.
Natomiast Agatę Kus interesuje dualizm, drugie oblicze i dekonstrukcja. Jej wielkoformatowe obrazy przedstawiają z pozoru codzienne historie, a jednocześnie są realne
i surrealne.
i emocji.

Druga Skóra to pierwsza wystawa z cyklu Północ – Południe. Projekt prezentuje trójmiejskich artystów w konfrontacji z twórcami z południa Polski.

The view on Sweden, from the Swedes themselves, and from others, is
often that it is seen as a rational modern welfare state. And still, the
forest and the nature is for most people very important, not only for
their leisure time. On the contrary, the nature, the forest and the sea
is too many people a place of wellbeing, a sense of a “natural”
belonging. For many people the nature is more defining than culture.

This is probably the reason why many artists in Sweden has taken the
nature as a popular motif, it says something about Swedish people. In
the work of DIANA RÖNNBERG the nature is the scenario for the human
condition, to be in a twilight zone between the rational and the belief
in something bigger. The realization that the modern welfare state in
the end cannot provide the answers for all the existential questions.
This sense that something that is lost in the modern society, is also
stressed in the work of LISELOTT WAJSTEDT _the only one_, there the
artists search for the roots of her grandmothers’ roots. In this case
it is not just the search of the individual, but also for one of the
minorities within Sweden, the Sami Culture.

One might think that Sweden – that has been an important voice for
democratic right around the world - would also be in forefront of
accepting it’s owns minorities. On the contrary, the Sami culture has
for centuries been under pressure from the Swedish State, and the Sami
Language was accepted as an official language in Sweden in year 2000 as
a minority language. Actually there was a paradox in the Swedish 20th
Century at the same time building a welfare state, it also excluded the
Swedish minorities. The Paradox might be due to the ideology of the
welfare state aimed to include people, even if the result was to erase
cultural background. The Sami culture was seen as something exotic –
and important to present in Museum as Swedens cultural history, and at
the same time it was often treated as an obstacle for development. The
works of Katarina PIRAK SIKKU deals with this context in her work, i.e.
how Sami minorities was studied in the early 20th century in what today
is called Racial biology.

However, Sweden is also strongly linked to the global economy, and as
most countries in diversified when it comes to different cultural and
religious background. Today, the globalization which contains of several
parallel processes – and sometimes as a paradox – both have open up
for a new cultural phenomena when people meet from different
backgrounds, like in the work of VALERIA MONTTI COLQUE and KRISTINA
MÜNTZING. Different cultural expressions starts intervening with each
other and they meet in the suburbs and in the social media. At the same
time this could also mean a loss of culture. Or rephrased in other
terms, the identification becomes more from the perspective of the
consumer, especially in a loss of habitat. The newer generation, have
lost the contact with their roots, in replace it by a fast consuming of
products and cultural expressions. It creates new forms of identity
construction, important for the individual, but also often shallow. The
work of VICTOR LIZANA is an example of this strive for identity and
belonging to the consumer society. However, the globalized world offers
also a higher possibilities of new constructions of identities; the
artists MERZEDES STURM LIE has found one in the female version of a
pirate, exploring the world and make its her own.

HATI HATI HAT - Kraków, Jakarta, Warszawa

HATI HATI HAT (‘hati hati’ – w języku indonezyjskim – ‘uwaga!’)

HATI HATI HAT (hati hati in Indonesian attention!) is a project in which Polish artists received one South-East Asian pith helmet each. The distinct trace of colonial times will now become in the hands of the artists a piece of critical re-design. Thus created hats, as part of the exhibition Social Design for Social Livingat the National Gallery in Jakarta (in cooperation with Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw), will make their appearance as a mere starting point for subsequent activities in the context of post-colonial social and economic inequality. During the exhibition selected hats will turn into a piece of interaction with the residents of Jakarta in a common performance, search for meaning and magical deconstruction of negative aspects of reality. Thus fashioned symbolic capital will become an auction piece, available on the project’s web-site, providing funds to solve an actual problem in Indonesia. Work related to Indonesia corresponds to the pedagogy of cooperation elaborated by the Razem Pamoja Foundation. Cooperation between Europe and distant Indonesia aims to broaden horizons, sensitise to social issues and combat egoism through common creation and description of the world. Social equalities, in particular, stemming from the position on the global market, are reproduced as much on the material as on the discursive level. Hats as symbols of former colonial times invoke injustice, simultaneously speaking of the present economic inequality between the countries of the Global North and the Global South. Thanks to the HATI HATI HAT project, the art field will be made aware of the existing dependencies through a deconstruction of the symbol of power and injustice. Simultaneously, a space of actual social change will emerge through the auction to materialise the capital created in symbolic gestures of disenchantment.
The project is realized by Justyna Górowska and Adam Gruba, representatives of the Razem Pamoja Foundation (in cooperation with Bartosz Przybył-Ołowski).
